Google Chrome Search Engine Keeps Changing to Bing

Follow the steps below to stop redirecting your searches to Bing in Google Chrome.

1. Check and Remove Suspicious Extensions

Sometimes, extensions can change your search settings without you knowing. It’s a good idea to double-check what’s installed.

To do this, go to ‘My extensions’ by typing ‘chrome://extensions/’ directly into your search bar then hit Enter. This will open a new tab in your chrome browser.

On the new tab, you’ll see your installed extensions. You can either remove or disable them one by one by clicking the toggle button in the lower right corner. In this example, only one extension is installed; please repeat this process for all your extensions.

2. Check Chrome’s Search Engines and Queries

Reviewing your search engines and queries for any unusual patterns can help resolve redirection issues. To do this simply type ‘chrome://settings/searchEngines’ directly into your search bar then press Enter.

This will open a new tab showing your search engine settings. Scroll down to Search engines and make sure that Google is your default search engine.

If Google is not set as your default search engine, you can easily change this. Click the vertical three dots next to Google and select Make default.

If Google is set as your default search engine, proceed on checking the Google search query. Simply click on the pencil icon next to Google then look into the ‘URL with %s in place with query’.

This Google search query should look something like this:

{google:baseURL}search?q=%s&{google:RLZ}{google:originalQueryForSuggestion}{google:assistedQueryStats}{google:searchFieldtrialParameter}{google:language}{google:prefetchSource}{google:searchClient}{google:sourceId}{google:contextualSearchVersion}ie={inputEncoding}

If not, you may copy and paste the search URL template above directly into yours, then click Save. This is the default Google search engine query.

3. Check for Malicious Shortcuts

Malicious shortcuts can also lead to redirection to Bing. To check for this, type ‘chrome://settings/searchEngines’ directly into your address bar and press Enter. Then, scroll down to the “Site search” section.

Typically, you’ll find shortcuts for ‘Bookmarks,’ ‘Gemini,’ ‘History,’ and ‘Tabs’ in this section. If you notice any malicious shortcuts that may redirect you to Bing, click the vertical three dots next to them and select Deactivate.

4. Reset Chrome Settings to Default

If the search settings don’t resolve the issue, you may need to reset Chrome completely. To do this, paste ‘chrome://settings/reset’ into your address bar and press Enter.

This will open the Reset settings tab. Click Restore settings to their original defaults, which will prompt a new dialog box.

In the new dialog box, click Reset settings. This will reset your Google Chrome settings, including shortcuts, extensions, cookies, history, saved passwords, and more. For further information on what changes occur when you restore to default, you can visit Google Chrome Help.
